Gun Permits

Weapons permits will be accepted at the door of the Sheriff's Office. Please have your completed application, training documentation, picture ID and any fees due readily available. The fee schedule is as follows:

  • New Concealed Carry Permit - $50
  • Renewal Concealed Carry Permit - $25
  • Permit to Acquire/Purchase - $25
Both, Permits to Purchase and Permits to Carry, are valid for 5 years.

Required Documentation:

When applying for a new permit, you will need to supply a copy of your drivers license, the completed application (found below), as well as ONE of the following types of training documentation:

  • Copy of honorable discharge from the military - DD214
  • Certificate from an ILEA or NRA hand gun class, OR
  • Certificate from an online interactive class by an ILEA or NRA instructor

When applying for the renewal of a current permit, you will only need to supply a copy of your drivers license and a completed application. If you have had a permit to carry since 2012, you are exempt from training as holding a permit is proof that you've had training.

REMEMBER: You must fill out a renewal form no more than 30 days prior to or up to 30 days after your current expiration date. Otherwise, your application will be considered a new permit request!

With COVID numbers on the rise, the Monona County Sheriff's Office lobby is currently closed to the public until further notice. However, in regards to renewing weapons permits, we are still accepting and processing applications with the following requirements:
  • Print & Complete the Application
  • Include a copy of your drivers license
  • Include a copy of your current permit, if applicable
  • Include a check or cash in the correct amount

These items can either be mailed to Monona County Sheriff's Department, 909 7th Street, Onawa, IA 51040, OR dropped in the gray mailbox on the outside of our building at the same address.
