Monona County Emergency Management

Monona County's Emergency Management Agency is responsible for the coordination of the Emergency Response activities of various law enforcement and fire departments, the Hazardous Material Response Team, local hospital, medical and ambulance services, as well as Red Cross, Salvation Army, Health & Human Services agencies.

Primary duties include, but aren't limited to:

Responsible for county-wide multi-hazards and their contingency plans.
Coordinates emergency planning activities & services in the event of disaster.
Assists governing officials of municipalities & county in the event of a disaster.
Promotes public knowledge of emergency management and disseminates information to the public.

A major function of the EMA is to support the responder agencies in safeguarding Monona County during periods of disaster. The assistance given by EMA falls into four main categories: Mitigation, Preparation, Response & Recovery.

Mitigation: Preventing future emergencies OR minimizing their effcts.

Includes any activities that prevent an emergency, reduce the chance of an emergency happening, or reduce the damaging effects of unavoidable emergencies.
Buying flood or fire insurance for your home is an example of a mitigation activity.
Mitigation activities take place before and after emergencies.

Preparation: Preparing/planning to handle an emergency.

Includes plans or preparations made to save lives and to help response and rescue operations.
Creating & practicing evacuation plans, as well as stocking food/water & owning a 1st Aid Kit, are all examples of preparedness.
Preparedness activities take place before an emergency occurs.

Response: Responding/reacting safely to an emergency.

Includes actions taken to save lives & prevent further property damage in an emergency situation. Repsonse is putting your preparation plans into action.
Seeking shelter from a tornado or turning off the gas valves in an earthquake are both response activities.
Response activities take place during an emergency.

Recovery: Recovering from an emergency.

Includes actions taken to return to a normal or an even safer situation follwing an emergency.
Recovery includes clean-up efforts and getting financial assistance to help pay for the repairs.
Recovery activities take place after an emergency.
